Yesterday, I predicted the top eight teams in the West, with a caveat that, while picking the Columbus Blue Jackets for the last playoff spot, it is more than likely that Calgary will be there instead. So, I have no choice but leading with the Flames on the list of teams that we think won't make the playoffs.1. Calgary Flames: If I were completely objective and rational, I'd put Calgary into the playoffs, based on the way they finished last season. If they keep that rate up, they can do even better than eighth. They lost defenseman Robgyn Regehr over the summer, and they didn't add much, so there is a good chance they won't play as well as they did late in the last season. Who knows? This is a big guess anyway.2. Phoenix Coyotes: The loss of Ilya Bryzgalov in goal will be devastating. So will be the departure of Vewrnon Fiddler, Ed Jovanovski, and Eric Belanger. It's hard to see how the offseason additions will make up for the offseason losses. Having said that, though, if things click, the Coyotes still could make the playoffs.3. Minnesota Wild: Defense seems to be a challenge this year. Plus, it looks like a front office "tear it down before we build it back up" situation. So, why then, are we picking the Wild at 11th rather than lower? We think they'll play reasonable solid hockey for the talent level that they have in place.4. Nashville Predators: A lot of people think Nashville, coming off a playoff win last year, will improve this year. In fact, it would be easy to pick them for the last playoff spot. But, it just seems that things just aren't right. They lost a lot of people in the summer, and I'm not sure really good players like Shea Weber can make enough of a difference.5. Edmonton Oilers: We love Edmonton fans. We think they need a moral victory, if not the first choice in the NFL draft. So, we're not picking them last. We're picking them two spots from last. We can't see the Oilers making the playoffs, but we can see them dropping below 13th.6. Colorado Avalanche: The Avalanche are in a deep amount of hurt. But maybe not. Maybe the will squeeze into the playoffs. Maybe we are out of our minds to pick them this low. New goaltenders are always scary. Look for a tough year in Denver.7. Dallas Stars: We may be the only people who pick Dallas last. The ownership issues make things tough. They won't make the playoffs. Quite simply, they need to rebuild, and that's what they will do. Look for them to get a very high draft pick.Authentic Titans Matt Hasselbeck Jersey, Colts Jeff Saturday Authentic Jersey, Official Seattle Seahawks Jersey, Seahawks Sidney Rice Jersey, Redskins Santana Moss Jersey, Redskins DeAngelo Hall Jersey, Colts Jersey, Authentic Tennessee Titans Jersey, wholesale nfl jerseys free shipping, Texans Jersey, Authentic Washington Redskins Jersey
ETAny remaining hope that the NBA season would start on time andregular-season games would not be canceled was all but destroyedFriday afternoon.A league source told The Salt Lake Tribune that the NBA denied a request by the NBA Players Association (NBPA) tomeet Sunday in New York for an 11th-hour collective bargainingagreement (CBA) conference.Barring an improbable last-minute deal, the league on Mondaywill cancel the first two weeks of the 2011-12 regular season, marking only the second time in history that the NBA will not play a full season.A lockout during the 1998-99 season resulted in a shortened50-game campaign, and the current work stoppage now has all themakings of a full-on labor war."I think that's kind of been the way we all thought it was goingto go down from the beginning," said Jazz guard Raja Bell, who isserving as Utah's player representative. "I don't know that ittakes any of us by surprise."The Jazz are scheduled to open the regular season Nov. 1 againstHouston at EnergySolutions Arena. That game and seven others --including a home contest Nov. 14 against the New York Knicks -- areexpected to officially be erased from the NBA calendar within the next 72hours unless league owners and players are able to suddenly settletheir differences before Monday's deadline. The league source told The Tribune that the NBA would only hold a meeting Sundayif the NBPA agreed to a preconditioned 50-50 split ofbasketball-related income (BRI). When the union asserted that itwould go no lower than 53-47, the NBA denied the request. The league offered a different version of events, placing blameon the NBPA. But it conceded that a 50-50 revenue split was at theheart of the fallout."We told the union [Friday] that we were willing to meet asearly as Sunday," an NBA spokesman said. "We alsoadvised them that we were unwilling to move above the 50-50 splitof revenues that was discussed between the parties on Tuesday, butthat we wanted to meet with them to discuss the many remaining openissues. The union declined."NBA commissioner David Sternthreatened to cancel the first two weeks of the regular seasonafter CBA talks broke down Tuesday in New York. The league canceledthe entire 114-game preseason that same day, wiping eight Jazzexhibition contests off the schedule. While NBA owners and players were clearlydivided after the meeting, some believed that Stern and NBPAexecutive director Billy Hunter would pare down the rhetoric andprivately reconvene before a historic press release is sent outMonday.Jazz coaches were hoping for just that, and have been meetingfor the past month in preparation for the regular season's Nov. 1start."Knowing that it's going to be a short preseason, we're notgoing to have the time to work with the guys," Utah assistant coachJeff Hornacek said Thursday. But after Friday's developments, the public relations war hasonly increased and the 2011-12 season is again on edge.Bell said that the NBA has used the press to spin thelockout, turning the league's push for a 50-50 BRI split into animage problem for the NBPA."Obviously that was the NBA's agenda and they control mostof the media," Bell said. "And so to your average fan out there, itwill come across as a player being greedy. When in fact, we are notthe ones that are saying we won't play. We offered to extend thecurrent system. We made concessions off our initial stances. Andthe NBA seems to be the one who won'tplay unless they get what they want."bsmith@sltrib.comTwitter: @tribjazzfacebook.com/tribjazz? Now that the Monday deadline proposed by NBA Commissioner David Stern has come and no labor deal appears to be in sight, the last-minute meetings and talks exposed themselves as being largely for show. Players and owners continue to be far apart on the major issues, namely BRI. The fact that it made headlines when the two sides scheduled a meeting to have another meeting was a dead giveaway. The meeting in New York on Sunday night did not bring any resolution. In fact, BRI was not even discussed. Is there any hope for a deal by Monday? Only time will tell, but fans should prepare for the very real possibility of an announcement that regular season games will be cancelled. This is the biggest mistake the league can make, and it will destroy everything the NBA has worked for to rebuild the goodwill it lost 13 years ago during the last work stoppage. Once a labor deal is reached, despite when that finally is, there will be no excuse from either side as to why they could not work things out sooner. Each side loses in a lockout. Players are finding that life overseas may not be as glamorous or as easy as they had hoped. Owners will find that locking out the players will cost them money and leave them with no product. Locking themselves in a room and getting a deal done should have been the first thing they did this offseason. But the egos and stubbornness of each got in the way of progress. Meetings to have more meetings were the common practice, and it has now come back to hurt everyone, especially those that follow and love the league. If the 11th hour talks prove to be fruitful, then all can be forgiven, but if the likely scenario of games being cancelled happens, then players and owners need to take a good long look at their negotiating tactics. The developments for the remainder of the day should be interesting, but in all likelihood the result will be bad news.I certainly hope Im wrong on this one.Michael C. Jones is a Yahoo! With Adrian Peterson steamrolling toward him near thegoal line, all Patrick Peterson(notes) could do was hold on for dear life and hope forsome help.I knew hes a very, very powerful runner, Arizonas prized rookiecornerback said. I just wanted to hold him up enough so the guys could get tohim and help me out a little bit.It was too late by then, and the Vikings running back buried his helmet intothe rookies chest and carried him 7 yards into the end zone for his thirdtouchdown of the first quarter of a 34-10 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. Welcome to the league, rookie.I taught him a couple lessons, said Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 122yards. But youve got to give credit to the young guy. He made some big plays, also. Not nearly enough to make up for Arizonas mistake-prone offense. Kevin Kolb(notes)completed 21 of 42 passes for 232 yards with two interceptions and a lostfumble. Kolb had five passes knocked down at the line of scrimmage and theCardinals (1-4) also had a touchdown wiped out by a penalty.Weve got guys wide open on offense, we cant make tackles on defense, wemake mistakes, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. We can sit here all dayand say that there are opportunities to make plays, but at some point youre notgetting it done and thats frustrating. It was over almost from the beginning. The Vikings were up 28-0 before theCardinals even managed a first down. After Asher Allens(notes) interception in Arizona territory, Adrian Petersonstiff-armed Richard Marshall(notes) to get around the right corner, then lowered hisshoulder on Patrick Peterson and sent the rookie bouncing backward as he crossedthe goal line to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead. Two plays later, Brian Robison(notes) sacked Kolb and forced a fumble that JaredAllen(notes) recovered at the Arizona 25. Donovan McNabb(notes), who was booed most of the dayin a 10-for-21, 169-yard performance, finished the drive with a 4-yard TD run tomake it 21-0, and Adrian Peterson put the finishing touches on the nightmarequarter with his 14-yard TD through Patrick Peterson.Hes a great runner, Patrick Peterson said. Hes definitely provenweek-in and week-out why hes the top running back in the league. The Cardinals head into their bye week with a lot of questions. Kolb hasbeen shaky in his first season after being acquired in a trade fromPhiladelphia, the defense has shown a propensity to give up big pass plays andKerry Rhodes(notes) (foot) and Darryn Colledge (head) both went down with injuriesSunday. We didnt get it done today, a clearly disappointed Whisenhunt said. Were going to look at what were doing and who were doing it with.Beanie Wells(notes) had 60 yards rushing on 20 carries with a touchdown whileplaying with a sore hamstring and Early Doucet(notes) had eight catches for 92 yardsfor the Cardinals. Doucets numbers would have been bigger, but his 11-yard TDfrom Kolb in the fourth quarter was wiped out by an illegal hands to the facepenalty on right tackle Jeremy Bridges(notes).Today obviously was the worst game weve played all season, said starreceiver Larry Fitzgerald(notes), who was held to four catches for 66 yards and had adrop in the first quarter. The last three we were in contention, we wereclose, but this one got out of hand early.Kolb looked out of sorts all day long, harassed by Robison and Jared Allenon his dropbacks and missing open receivers with errant throws. If its tough for him to throw, then its always tough for 11 to catchit, Asher Allen said of Fitzgerald. With the Vikings defense swarming and pressuring, Whisenhunt finally pulledKolb for backup Richard Bartel(notes) late in the fourth quarter. It wasnt hard to figure out the main storyline heading into Sundays Bengals-Jaguars matchup. Entering the game, the Bengals boasted the NFLs top ranked defense, allowing an average of only 275 yards per game. The Jaguars, owners of the one of the leagues most inept offenses, were hoping to find some footing after a disappointing 1-3 start. Throw in a looping wind and two rookie quarterbacks seemingly at two distinct levels of NFL development and perhaps an eventual 30-20 Bengals win was predictable. Yet if there is another defining characteristic of the 2011 Bengals, it is that their games are usually decided in the final minutes.Against Jacksonville, the Bengals battled with a surprisingly resilient opponent before taking the lead late in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Bernard Scott. Scotts first touchdown of the season came only minutes after Jaguars rookie Blaine Gabbert connected with wide receiver Jason Hill for a stunning 74-yard score. The Jaguars first second-half touchdown of the season was the result of a defensive breakdown between Bengal cornerback Leon Hall and safety Chris Crocker. However, Hills score was an aberration compared to the rest of the game in which the Bengals limited the Jaguars offense to 276 total yards and just 6 third-down completions.Outside of a few bouncing scampers from running back Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jaguars were forced to rely on their rookie quarterback which in the face of a persistent northern Florida wind was a risky proposition.Throughout the afternoon, the Bengals pass rush both hurried Gabbert and benefitted from the rookies indecision. Despite collecting only three sacks, the Bengals defense knocked Gabbert around and crowded his passing lanes. On numerous offensive possessions, Gabbert tended to hurry his throws and showed the type of inaccuracy characteristic of a rookie starter. Often, Gabberts three-quarter sidearm release was knocked down by either a stiff wind or the hands of Bengal defenders.Gabberts day was effectively finished when the Missouri product helplessly watched an errant Brad Meester shotgun snap sail beyond the rookies hands. In an abrupt contrast to Gabberts struggles, Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton added to his burgeoning legend.Dalton led the Bengals on a game-winning fourth quarter drive for the second consecutive week. However, after leading his offense to two fourth-quarter scores in Buffalo last week, Daltons task against Jacksonville was a bit simpler. After a wind-swept 22-yard punt by the Jaguars Matt Turk, Dalton and the Bengals took over on the Jacksonville 23. Yet, Dalton delivered perhaps the games biggest play by connecting with tight end Jermaine Gresham on a key fourth down completion to continue the eventual game-winning drive.Daltons accuracy on third and fourth downs allowed an otherwise sluggish Bengals offense to sustain enough momentum to carry into the latter stages of the game.In particular, Daltons on-field relationship with fellow rookie A.J. Green continued to develop against the Jaguars. Dalton and Green rescued the Bengals on several key passing downs connecting for 5 completions and 90 yards including an early 37-yard score.Perhaps the most impressive component of Daltons performance was demonstrated through the rookies unnatural composure. With only four career starts on his NFL resume, Dalton never appeared rattled even in the face of a scoring slump that lasted for more than two quarters.By the time Dalton and his offense had recovered, the combination of the Bengals defense and an overwhelmed Gabbert had already paved the way for the teams third victory of 2011. By the time Geno Atkins danced into the end zone for an after the fact touchdown, both Dalton and the Bengals as a whole again redefined what "predictable" means in the NFL.Official Seattle Seahawks Jersey, Authentic Washington Redskins Jersey, Authentic Redskins Chris Cooley Jersey, Authentic Tennessee Titans Jersey, Authentic Colts Pierre Garcon Jersey, Colts Jersey, Colts Donald Brown Authentic Jersey, Seahawks Lofa Tatupu Jersey, Authentic Texans Brian Cushing Jersey, Authentic Titans Jake Locker Jersey, Texans Jersey
Bernard Berrian was a surprise healthy scratch for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, marking the first time in the wide receiver's career that he hasn't played in a game for a reason other than injury. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he left Berrian on the inactive list against the ArizonaCardinals for an unspecified disciplinary reason, but not because of his critical comments or any health-related issue. "Just looking at the bigger picture about what we have to get done as a football team. That's not to say it'll continue to be this way, but there were some things that we needed to get done that had to be done," said Frazier, who also held starting cornerback Cedric Griffin out of the first series as punishment for an unspecified transgression. Relive every game this season online and on-demand with enhanced viewing features. Get NFL Game Rewind. Berrian has just two catches for 37 yards this season despite playing more snaps than any other Vikings receiver over their first four games. He also wrote on Twitter during a rant after last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that he has been open for the past four years but hasn't gotten the ball. Frazier spoke with Berrian earlier in the week after the receiver was embroiled in a Twitter spat with a Minnesota state representative who also happens to be a big supporter of the team's drive for a new stadium. Berrian took exception to Rep. John Kriesel poking fun at him after the 22-17 loss at Kansas City last week. However, Berrian didn't know Kriesel was a state lawmaker during the interaction. Kriesel took responsibility for starting the spat, and Berrian said he planned to call and apologize. But perhaps more damaging for Berrian was his response to a fan's statement that he saw Berrian open at least five times against the Chiefs. "Been like that the last four years," Berrian wrote back. Berrian largely has been a disappointment ever since signing a six-year, $42 million contract that included $16 million in guaranteed money in 2008. He restructured the deal to remain with the team before this season, but he hasn't been able to connect with new starting quarterback Donovan McNabb to give the Vikings the downfield threat they sorely need. Berrian missed five games (thumb) in 2005 and one game (rib) in 2006 with the Chicago Bears and two games (groin) last season with the Vikings, but this was the first non-injury absence of his eight-year NFL career. ETFrom mistake-filled to mistake-free in just seven days. That is the kind of turnaround the Jets will need against the Patriotson Sunday after their debacle against the Ravens, when they turnedthe ball over four times. Three of those were returned fortouchdowns in a 34-17 defeat."When you go up against [Tom] Brady, your margin of error isdiminished," Sirius XM host and CBS analyst Rich Gannon said. "Youcan't afford a mistake or two because that's just giving them moreopportunities. You almost have to match them score for score andthat has to be your mindset going into the game. Every drive for[Mark]Sanchez will be absolutely critical. He's got to make the mostof it."Sanchez made the least of it Sunday night in Baltimore. Thequarterback was responsible for all four turnovers with threefumbles and an interception. The Jets' two touchdowns came on akickoff return return and an interception. Gannon, whoquarterbacked the Raiders to an AFC Championship and a Super Bowlappearance in 2002, worked out with Sanchez before last season."They concern you, there's no question about that," Gannon saidof Sanchez's mistakes. "He definitely deserves credit for thesuccess they've had, but now he's in his third year and you expecthim to take the next step and that was a step back and he's got toget it straightened out. A lot of it was recognition, I thought, and some poor decisions. He's got to get that cleaned up, becausethat's what is really holding him back."The lack of a running game has not helped Sanchez this year, either. Coach Rex Ryan blasted the offense this week and suggestedthe Jets would try to return to theground-andpound approach that has led them to consecutive AFCChampionship games. But when the Jets have tried to run the ball, they have been pounded into the ground averaging 3.1 yards a carry, good for 30th in the 32-team NFL.So, the pressure may remain on Sanchez to keep up with thePatriots' high-scoring attack."Usually quarterbacks when they go into their third year, that'susually the year they take off," ESPN analyst and former Jets and Patriots lineman DamienWoody said of the quarterback he used to protect before retiringthis offseason."The first couple of years you find your way, but usually thatthird year is where they take off. That was the whole premise whenRex said we are going to let Mark take the reins a little bit more,we are going to let the training wheels off a bit more. Having thatexperience for two years, especially in the playoffs, he's ready totake the next step. I am not saying he can't do it this year, butwhat Rex and the coaching staff have to take it as [is] what is ourbest option to win football games?"It's a question not many teams have found the answer to whenfacing the Patriots. But the Jets did deal New England a painfulloss in the divisional round of the playoffs in January."This is a veteran team that knows how to deal with adversity, there's too much talent there," Gannon said of the Jets. "They have to get healthyalong the offensive line, their quarterback has to settle downthey, have to run the ball better. The defense had plenty ofproblems the other night, too. This is too good of a team not toturn it around, [but] they are starting to concern you a bitbecause they have been inconsistent."Jets AT Patriots Sunday, 4:15 p.m.,CBSBen Roethlisberger Jersey Womens, DeMarcus Ware Jersey Blue And White, Brandon Jacobs Jersey Red, Brandon Jacobs Jersey Blue, Darrelle Revis Jersey Red, Authentic Danny Woodhead Jersey, Authentic Heath Miller Jersey, Darren McFadden Jersey Black, Darrelle Revis Jersey Blue, Authentic Jared Allen Jersey, wholesale jerseys, Premier Jeremy Maclin Jersey, BenJarvus Green-Ellis Jersey Black, Authentic Darren McFadden Jersey Black, DeMarcus Ware Jersey Blue, Authentic Michael Crabtree Jersey, Charles Woodson Authentic Jersey, Jeremy Maclin Authentic Jersey
Matt Slauson was praising teammate Nick Mangoldfor everything he does as the starting center, and then thethird-year left guard went perhaps a little too far.Talking about New England nose tackle Vince Wilfork, Slausonnoted that "Vince is a load and he's quick too, [but] Nick seems tohave him figured out, so we're all really happy" that Mangold willreturn from an ankle injury. Not so fast, said Mangold. Not about coming back, but aboutWilfork."I do not have him figured out," the Jets' sixth-year center saidThursday. "God bless [Slauson] for saying such things."At least, however, it appears Mangold will renew his rivalrywith Wilfork on Sunday when the Jets visit New England. Mangold hasmissed the past two games with a high ankle sprain, but haspracticed on a limited basis the last two days. Coach Rex Ryan saidMangold is "ready to roll" for Sunday's contest, and when asked ifhe would play, Mangold said, "I plan on it."Mangold's presence should benefit a Jets running game that is ranked30th in the NFL through four games. The Jets were fourth in the league inthat category last season, and averaged 4.1 yards per rush in theirupset playoff win over New England in January, helped by Mangoldoften winning the one-on-one matchup with Wilfork. A strong runninggame also would control the clock and keep Tom Brady and thehigh-powered New England offense idling on the bench. It also should help the Jets that they are facing a yieldingPatriots defense allowing 4.8 yards per carry. But Mangold saidthose statistics can be misleading."When you look at a team," Mangold said, "you can't get suckedin by numbers. You have to look at them on film and see whatthey're doing, and know also that this is a huge rivalry and thegame is always a fantastic matchup and [the atmosphere] seems toelevate the performances.''When asked about improving the ground game, veteran running backLaDainian Tomlinson said, "part of it is doing it a little bitmore, being more balanced and part of it is ... execution, understanding what we're up against, executing the play exactly. Onoffense it's tough because if one person, and I'm sure you guys[media] have heard this, if one person doesn't do their job, then[the play] breaks down."So there figures to be fewer missed assignments with veteranMangold making the line calls, as opposed to undrafted rookie ColinBaxter, who had started the past two games."Having [Mangold] back is a sense of comfort for all of us onoffense," said Tomlinson, who has 59 yards on 20 carries. But perhaps the best example of the Patriot' steely focusheading into this weekend's matchup at Gillette Stadium wasnormally light-hearted Tom Brady gritting his teeth through a newsconference Wednesday that he stormed out of after just five minutesdue to one too many questions about Antonio Cromartie. The same record-setting quarterback who as recently as thissummer described the playoff loss to the Jets as the worst of his storiedcareer suddenly came down with near-amnesia about it this week."That was a long time ago, so that game doesn't have muchbearing on this week," Brady said. "We're a different team."Belichick set the tone publicly on Wednesday, claiming with astraight face just three days after Rex Ryan's team was completelydismantled by Baltimore on national TV that the Jets "look good, as they alwaysdo."Belichick also did not deny telling his team to keep itscollective mouth shut when asked about the Patriot' notablesilence. "We try to focus on what we need to do to beat the Jets," Belichick said when asked ifhe had issued a gag order. "That's what we're here for. I mean, what else is there to talk about?"An even more obvious example of Belichick's commentary crackdownhas been the continued disappearing act of Branch. The veteranwideout, who had blasted the Jets as classless immediately afterthe playoff loss for dancing and mimicking Jets landings on thePatriot' field, told The Post in August his teammates hadn'tforgotten those incidents.Branch also mocked the Jets in that interview with The Postfor being too giddy about winning a playoff game that wasn't theSuper Bowl, but he continues to show no interest in adding to thosecomments this week. The three former Jets now on the Patriot - defensiveend Shaun Ellis, defensive back James Ihedigbo and running backDanny Woodhead - appear to have been given even stricter marchingorders to avoid riling up their old team. Both Ellis and Ihedigbo claimed rather unconvincingly thatfacing the Jets added no extra motivation, with Ellis even describing his former club as "just another team tome." Woodhead, meanwhile, has been absent from media sessions allweek, although that's more likely because he is missing practicedue to injury.Part of the reason for Brady's seriousness was blowback from acomment he made before the Patriot' home game last month with SanDiego that fans "start drinking early. Get nice and rowdy. It's a4:15 game, a lot of time to get lubed up."Asked if he had similar advice this week, Brady snarled."I'm not joking anymore," he said. The same goes for everyone else in a Patriot hoodie or uniformthis week.wholesale jerseys china, BenJarvus Green-Ellis Authentic Jersey, Authentic Brandon Jacobs Jersey, Authentic Darren McFadden Jersey, Authentic Asante Samuel Jersey, Authentic Aaron Rodgers Jersey, Authentic BenJarvus Green-Ellis Jersey, Brandon Jacobs Authentic Jersey, Asante Samuel Authentic Jersey, Darren McFadden Authentic Jersey, wholesale jerseys, Darrelle Revis Authentic Jersey, DeMarcus Ware Authentic Jersey, Authentic Alex Smith Jersey, Authentic Ben Roethlisberger Jersey, Authentic DeMarcus Ware Jersey, Authentic Darrelle Revis Jersey, Ben Roethlisberger Authentic Jersey
